What is an automatic gate barrier system?

An automatic gate barrier system — commonly called a boom barrier — is a motorised access-control device that raises or lowers a horizontal arm to regulate the entry and exit of vehicles at a controlled point. Gate barriers are used in parking facilities, residential compounds, commercial buildings, toll plazas, and industrial sites to prevent unauthorised vehicle access and manage traffic flow. Emirtech Technology, an ADMCC-approved security systems integrator based in Abu Dhabi, designs, supplies, installs, and maintains gate barrier systems for clients in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain — integrating them with RFID readers, ANPR cameras, CCTV, and access control platforms as required.

Product Range

Gate Barrier System Types We Supply

Automatic Boom Barrier

Motorised arm barriers for parking lots, toll booths, and controlled entry/exit points. Available in 3 m to 9 m arm lengths, with optional fast-cycle motors for high-volume lanes.

Automatic Sliding Gate

Motorised sliding gates that travel horizontally on tracks — ideal for wide openings or sites with limited space in front of the gate. Suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial perimeters.

Automatic Swing Gate

Single or double leaf motorised swing gates for driveways, residential compounds, and commercial entrances where a traditional gate aesthetic is preferred.

Automatic Rising Bollards

Motorised retractable bollards that rise from the ground to block vehicle access. Used at high-security or pedestrian-priority zones such as government buildings and public squares.

Automatic Road Blocker

Heavy-duty vehicle-arrest barriers that deploy a solid plate or spike strip to stop forced vehicle entry. Anti-ram performance depends on the crash rating of the specific model, which must be confirmed against the manufacturer's test certificate.

Speed Gates & Flap Barriers

Pedestrian-lane barriers including speed gates, flap barriers, and tripod turnstiles for lobbies, car parks, and transit areas requiring fast, controlled pedestrian access.

System Components & How Gate Barriers Work

A modern automatic gate barrier system is made up of several integrated components that work together to detect, authorise, and control access:

  • Control Unit: The central processor that receives sensor inputs, validates access credentials, and sends commands to the barrier motor.
  • Barrier Mechanism: The physical barrier — boom arm, sliding panel, swing leaf, bollard, or road blocker — that blocks or permits passage.
  • Drive Motor / Actuator: An electric motor that moves the barrier mechanism on command from the control unit.
  • Vehicle & Pedestrian Sensors: Loop detectors buried in the road surface, infrared sensors, or proximity sensors detect approaching vehicles and confirm passage completion before the barrier closes.
  • Access Control Devices: RFID card readers, PIN keypads, biometric scanners (fingerprint or face recognition), or long-range UHF transponders authenticate the user before the barrier opens.
  • Safety Sensors: Photoelectric beams and safety edges detect obstructions in the barrier's travel path, triggering an automatic stop or reversal to prevent vehicle or pedestrian injury.
  • Communication Interface: Ethernet, RS-485, or Wi-Fi connectivity links the barrier to a central access control management system, CCTV platform, or security control room.
  • Power Supply & UPS: Mains power with battery backup or UPS ensures the barrier continues to operate during power interruptions.

Operational Sequence

When a vehicle approaches, sensors signal the control unit; the access control device authenticates the user; upon approval, the motor raises the barrier arm; safety sensors monitor the passage; once the vehicle clears, exit-side sensors trigger the barrier to close automatically. The system logs each transaction for audit and reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a gate barrier supplier and installer in Abu Dhabi?
Emirtech Technology, based in Mussafah, supplies and installs gate barriers and boom barriers across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain for parking areas, residential compounds, commercial buildings and industrial sites, with ANPR and RFID access integration, and repairs and maintains existing barriers. We supply the common brands (CAME, Magnetic AutoControl, BFT, FAAC and Nice) through authorised UAE distributor channels; we are an independent integrator, not an authorised dealer or manufacturer of these brands.
What types of gate barrier systems does Emirtech supply in Abu Dhabi?
Emirtech supplies automatic boom barriers, sliding gates, swing gates, rising bollards, road blockers, and pedestrian speed gates. We cover residential, commercial, industrial, and high-security applications across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. For help choosing, see our buyer's guide for UAE compounds.
Is Emirtech Technology an approved contractor for barrier systems in Abu Dhabi?
Emirtech is an ADMCC-approved security systems contractor based in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi. That is a company approval; it does not mean the gate or barrier hardware itself is ADMCC-approved.
Can gate barriers be integrated with CCTV, ANPR, or biometric access control?
Yes. Emirtech integrates boom barriers and automatic gates with ANPR (licence plate recognition) cameras, RFID readers, biometric scanners, CCTV systems, and intercoms to create a unified access control solution for your site. For residential compounds see gated community and compound CCTV.
How much does a gate barrier system cost in Abu Dhabi?
Pricing depends on the barrier type, arm length, access control peripherals, quantity of lanes, and civil works required. Emirtech provides free site surveys and detailed quotations. See our gate barrier cost guide for a full breakdown of cost drivers. Contact us at [email protected] or call +971 55 651 7843 for a no-obligation estimate.
Do you install gate barriers in Dubai as well as Abu Dhabi?
No. Our main coverage and our ADMCC-regulated gate barrier work are in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and our Dubai work is limited to IT AMC and time attendance, so we do not take Dubai gate barrier projects. Dubai's electronic-security regulator is SIRA, a separate licence Emirtech does not hold.
What happens to the barrier during a power cut?
Gate barrier systems can include battery backup or UPS to maintain operation during power outages. Barriers can also be configured to fail-open (allowing free passage) or fail-secure (remaining closed) depending on your site's safety and security policy.
Do you offer maintenance contracts for gate barrier systems?
Yes. Emirtech offers Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) covering scheduled preventive maintenance, software updates, and priority callout response to keep your barrier systems operating reliably year-round.
How does a boom barrier work?
A motor raises and lowers a counterbalanced arm across the lane. A loop detector in the road or a photocell senses a vehicle so the arm does not come down on it, and a card reader, remote, ANPR camera or intercom gives the signal to lift it. Safety devices stop or reverse the arm if something is in its path.
What is a loop detector and why does a barrier need one?
An inductive loop is a wire laid in a cut in the road surface that senses the metal of a vehicle above it. The barrier uses it to stay up while a vehicle is underneath and to close after the vehicle has passed. It is a safety device, and a faulty loop is a common reason for a barrier that will not lower or lift.
What arm length do I need for a boom barrier?
Arm length follows the width of the lane plus some clearance. Arms of about three to six metres cover most car-park and compound lanes, and longer arms, up to about nine metres on some models, suit wide openings; very wide entrances are often split into one barrier per lane. We confirm the arm length, arm type (straight or folding) and operator speed on the site survey.
Do you repair or service existing gates and barriers?
Yes. We diagnose and repair automatic gates and boom barriers of any brand in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, whoever installed them, with a reply the same working day; Al Ain is served from our Mussafah office. See automatic gate and barrier repair.
What safety standard applies to automatic gates and barriers?
The reference standard for power-operated gates and barriers is EN 12453, the European standard for safety in use. It covers hazards such as crushing and impact and the protective devices that address them: limited closing force, obstacle detection, photocells and safety edges. We commission each gate with the safety devices its manufacturer specifies (photocells, safety edge or obstacle detection, manual release) and test that it stops or reverses on contact. Emirtech does not issue an EN 12453 certificate, so ask at the survey which safety devices your gate will carry. See the standard's scope at BSI.
What gate system does a gated community or residential compound need?
A typical community entrance has separate entry and exit lanes, each with a boom barrier or a sliding or swing gate. Residents are let in by a UHF RFID tag or number plate recognition, visitors use a video intercom or a guard booth, and loop detectors or photocells stop the barrier closing on a vehicle. We usually add a pedestrian gate or turnstile beside the vehicle lane, a manual release so the gate can be opened by hand in an emergency, and battery backup for power cuts. We confirm the lane layout and access method at the site survey.
What is the difference between a boom barrier and a rising bollard?
A boom barrier uses a horizontal arm to control vehicle lanes and is suited to standard car parks and compound entrances. A rising bollard is a vertical post embedded in the ground, used where a physical or anti-ram barrier is needed — such as pedestrian zones, government buildings, or high-security perimeters.
