What is a GPS vehicle tracking system and how does it work?
A GPS vehicle tracking system uses satellite signals to determine a vehicle's real-time location, which is then transmitted via a cellular network to a cloud-based platform. Fleet managers can view live positions, replay historical routes, and receive automated alerts for events such as speeding or geofence violations through a web browser or mobile app.
Does Emirtech install GPS tracking systems in Abu Dhabi?
Yes. Emirtech Technology is based in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi and provides full supply, installation, configuration, and support for GPS vehicle tracking systems across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain (Dubai: smart home, PABX and IP-PBX phone systems, IT AMC and time attendance by on-site visits, gate barriers, ANPR, video intercoms and turnstiles by Emirtech itself, and CCTV, alarm and access control through SIRA-approved partners).
Is Emirtech ADMCC-approved, and does that cover GPS tracking?
Emirtech Technology is an ADMCC-approved security systems company. ADMCC approval covers security systems such as CCTV and access control; it is not an approval for GPS tracking devices. For commercial vehicles in Abu Dhabi, the transport regulator sets its own tracking rules (see the Asateel question below).
How much does a GPS vehicle tracking system cost in the UAE?
Pricing depends on fleet size, hardware specification and the software features required. A typical quotation separates the tracker hardware per vehicle, installation, the SIM and data plan, and the platform subscription, with optional extras such as fuel sensors or in-vehicle cameras. Emirtech does not publish a fixed price list because each fleet differs; send your vehicle count and types for a written quotation that itemises these parts.
Can GPS tracking systems help reduce fuel costs?
Yes, in many fleets. By monitoring fuel levels, identifying idling and optimising routes, GPS tracking can reduce wasted fuel, but the saving depends on the fleet, routes and driver behaviour, so Emirtech does not promise a fixed percentage. The system also alerts operators to unusual consumption patterns that may indicate fuel theft or mechanical issues.
What is geofencing in a GPS tracking system?
Geofencing allows you to draw virtual boundaries around specific locations — such as a depot, customer site, or restricted zone. When a tracked vehicle enters or exits that boundary, the system sends an automatic alert to the fleet manager or dispatcher.
Do you offer annual maintenance contracts (AMC) for GPS tracking systems?
Yes. Emirtech offers annual maintenance contracts covering hardware inspections, software updates, and technical support to ensure your fleet tracking system operates reliably throughout the year.
Can GPS tracking be used for assets other than vehicles?
Yes. GPS tracking units can be deployed on heavy equipment, trailers, generators, and other valuable assets to monitor location, usage, and security — not only on cars and trucks.
Do commercial vehicles in Abu Dhabi need an approved tracking device (Asateel)?
Some do. Abu Dhabi Mobility (formerly the Integrated Transport Centre, ITC) runs the Asateel platform for freight, passenger bus and school bus transport, and states that permits are only available for vehicles with a functioning tracking device installed. Abu Dhabi Mobility publishes a list of approved tracking devices, and whether a device is accepted is decided by that list, not by the installer. Check the device model against the Abu Dhabi Mobility list before you buy, and confirm with Abu Dhabi Mobility which category your vehicles fall under. Emirtech is not a licensing body of Abu Dhabi Mobility. More detail is in
our fleet tracking guide.
What is the difference between a hardwired and an OBD-II GPS tracker?
A hardwired tracker is connected by an installer to the vehicle's power and ignition and is normally hidden, which makes it harder to remove. An OBD-II tracker plugs into the diagnostic port without wiring, so it is quick to fit and to move between vehicles, but it can be unplugged. Emirtech recommends a type after a survey of your vehicles; the table on this page compares the four common types.
Why does my GPS tracker lose position in car parks, tunnels or between tall buildings?
GPS needs a clear view of the sky. GPS.gov notes that accuracy worsens near buildings, bridges and trees and that indoor or underground use blocks the signal. The tracker normally resumes reporting once the vehicle is back in open sky. Ask whether your model stores points while out of coverage and which satellite systems it supports.
Are dash cams and in-vehicle cameras allowed on company vehicles in the UAE?
UAE police authorities quoted by Gulf News have said that installing a dash cam is not illegal, but recording or publishing images of people without their consent can breach the privacy provisions of the Cybercrimes Law. For company vehicles, set a written policy, tell drivers, limit who can view footage and do not post it online. Confirm your policy with a legal adviser.
Does a GPS tracker need TDRA approval in the UAE?
TDRA states that telecom equipment must be registered and approved before it is put up for sale in the UAE, and it publishes a searchable list of approved equipment. Ask your supplier for the model's registration number and check it on that list; for the exact category your device falls under, confirm with TDRA. Commercial vehicles in Abu Dhabi are also subject to the Abu Dhabi Mobility approved-device list (see the Asateel question above).
How often does a GPS tracker update a vehicle's position?
It depends on the device and the data plan. Many fleet trackers report every few seconds while the vehicle is moving and less often when it is parked, and the interval is usually set in the platform. A shorter interval gives a smoother live map but uses more data, so the interval is confirmed when the system is configured.
Can a GPS tracker tell which driver is using a vehicle?
Some trackers can read a driver tag, such as an RFID card or key fob, so trips and alerts are linked to a named driver. It needs a compatible tracker and the driver presenting the tag at the start of a journey. Tell us if you need driver identification when you send your vehicle list, so the quotation includes the right hardware.
Can a GPS tracker stop or immobilise a vehicle remotely?
Some trackers can be wired to a relay that cuts the engine or fuel pump, usually used for theft recovery. It must be fitted safely, used only when the vehicle is stationary or moving slowly, and agreed with the vehicle owner. It is an optional extra, not part of every installation, and we confirm at the survey whether it suits your vehicles.
