How does Emirtech approach EV charger installation in Abu Dhabi?

Emirtech Technology is an Abu Dhabi contractor (ADMCC-approved for security systems) founded in 2018 and based at M44, Mussafah Industrial Area. We install and commission AC and DC electric vehicle chargers for villas, residential towers, commercial premises, hotels and fleet depots across the Abu Dhabi Emirate. Our methodology begins with a structured site survey — electrical capacity assessment of the existing distribution board, load calculation against connected and projected loads, measurement of the cable route from the main DB to the proposed charger location, and verification of available three-phase supply for higher-rated AC units. Where the survey identifies insufficient spare capacity, we specify distribution board upgrades including additional MCB, Type B RCD and Type 2 surge protective device sized to manufacturer requirements; the distribution-board work itself is carried out and certified by the certificate holder named in the quotation. A typical 22 kW AC charger draws about 32 A per phase and needs a dedicated three-phase circuit sized above that with Sub-Main power cable and Cat6 for control / OCPP back-haul; we install cable management and conduit with cleat fixings to UAE installation practice. Mechanical mounting is delivered as wall-mount or pedestal with structural fixings to suit substrate. Commissioning includes open-circuit and continuity tests, polarity verification, RCD trip-time testing, earth-loop impedance measurement and the manufacturer self-test sequence, after which we hand over a documented test sheet, single-line diagram, charger configuration record and user training. All work is delivered against IEC 61851 (general AC charger requirements), IEC 61851-23 (DC charging stations) and IEC 62196 (connector standards). To be explicit: Emirtech is not a DoE-Abu Dhabi licensed solar contractor and not an EAD or EWEC endorsed EV provider — we are not a Channel Partner, Authorised Distributor or brand-authorised representative of ABB, Schneider Electric, Wallbox, EVBox, ChargePoint or Tesla, and we are not the IEC or the Department of Energy. We do not register chargers on utility schemes, issue connection approvals or carry out works on the public distribution network upstream of the point of supply; those activities sit with EAD/EWEC and their endorsed contractors. Scope — what we deliver and explicitly do not

EV charger installation is an electrical and commissioning discipline with clear regulatory boundaries in Abu Dhabi. We are transparent about which activities sit inside our scope as an Abu Dhabi contractor (our ADMCC approval covers security systems only) and which activities sit with EAD, EWEC and their endorsed providers.

  • We deliver: AC and DC EV charger site survey, load calculation, distribution board upgrade, Sub-Main and OCPP cabling, wall-mount or pedestal installation, IEC 61851 and IEC 62196 aligned commissioning, documented test sheets, single-line diagrams and user training. Fixed wiring, distribution-board work and the testing certificate are Electrical Installation Work carried out and certified by the certificate holder named in the quotation.
  • We do not deliver: utility-tied charger registration, public distribution-network works upstream of the point of supply, EAD/EWEC scheme submissions, statutory inspections we are not endorsed for, billing-platform operations or branded warranty repairs reserved for authorised distributors.
  • We are not: a DoE-Abu Dhabi licensed solar contractor, an EAD or EWEC endorsed EV installation provider, a Channel Partner or Authorised Distributor of ABB, Schneider Electric, Wallbox, EVBox, ChargePoint or Tesla, and not the IEC standards body.
  • We are not affiliated with: ABB, Schneider Electric, Wallbox, EVBox, ChargePoint, Tesla, IEC, the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi (DoE) or authorised EV installation distributors in the UAE.
  • Geographic scope for ADMCC-regulated electronic security work is the Abu Dhabi Emirate; EV charger installations are delivered within the Emirate alongside our security and AV work.
  • Where a project requires utility registration, scheme approval or works on the public network, the client engages a contractor registered for that work and we coordinate the in-premise installation alongside that scope.

If you need an Abu Dhabi installer who is clear about scope, IEC-aligned in commissioning and based locally for site support, call +971 55 651 7843 to discuss your EV charger installation.

Common questions

FAQs

What sizes of EV charger does Emirtech install?

We install single-phase AC chargers from 7.4 kW for residential villa applications, three-phase AC units at 11 kW and 22 kW for residential, commercial and hospitality sites, and DC fast chargers for fleet depots and commercial estates. Charger selection is confirmed against site supply capacity and the client's vehicle profile during the survey stage.

Do I need a distribution board upgrade for a 22 kW AC charger?

A 22 kW AC charger draws about 32 A per phase, so it needs a dedicated three-phase circuit sized above that, RCD protection that covers DC fault currents (Type B, or Type A with built-in DC fault detection, as the charger manufacturer specifies) and a manufacturer-specified breaker on a free way in the distribution board. If the existing DB has no spare three-phase capacity, or if the connected load calculation does not leave headroom for the charger, we specify the DB upgrade or sub-DB, and the distribution-board work is carried out and certified by the certificate holder named in the quotation.

Which standards are EV chargers installed and commissioned against?

We install and commission against IEC 61851 for AC charger general requirements, IEC 61851-23 for DC charging station requirements and IEC 62196 for connector and inlet standards. Commissioning covers open-circuit and continuity testing, polarity verification, RCD trip-time testing, earth-loop impedance measurement and the manufacturer self-test sequence. Abu Dhabi's 2020 wiring regulations also added definitions for EV supply equipment; see the Abu Dhabi Electricity Wiring Regulations 2020 guide.

Is Emirtech an EAD or EWEC endorsed EV provider?

No. Emirtech is not an EAD or EWEC endorsed EV installation provider and is not a DoE-Abu Dhabi licensed solar contractor. We install and commission the charger unit. Fixed wiring, distribution-board work and the testing certificate are Electrical Installation Work that Abu Dhabi reserves to holders of a distribution-company Competency Certificate, and the quotation names who carries out and certifies that work. Where a utility-tied registration, scheme submission or distribution-network change is required, the client engages a contractor registered for that work and we coordinate the works in-premise.

Are you authorised by ABB, Schneider Electric, Wallbox, EVBox, ChargePoint or Tesla?

No. Emirtech is not a Channel Partner, Authorised Distributor or brand-authorised representative of ABB, Schneider Electric, Wallbox, EVBox, ChargePoint or Tesla, and is not affiliated with the IEC or the Department of Energy. We procure chargers through authorised UAE channels and install and commission them per the manufacturer documentation and IEC standards.

Who is an EV charger supplier and installer in Abu Dhabi?

Emirtech Technology, based at M44, Mussafah, Abu Dhabi, supplies and installs EV chargers for villas, apartment buildings, hotels, workplaces and fleets across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. We procure the charger through authorised UAE channels, survey the site, install it and commission it to IEC 61851. We are not a brand-authorised distributor and not an EAD or EWEC endorsed EV provider, so registering the charger with the utility stays with the owner. For Al Ain, see EV charger installation in Al Ain.

Do I need a permit or approval to install an EV charger in Abu Dhabi?

Yes, the charger has to be registered. Abu Dhabi EV charger owners register with the distribution company (ADDC in Abu Dhabi, AADC in Al Ain, both TAQA Distribution) so a dedicated meter can be fitted. ADDC's tariff page says a flat AED 92 monthly fee applies until the meter is installed, then billing follows actual consumption; that page was last updated in 2021, so confirm the current terms with ADDC. Registration is the owner's step: we survey the circuit, install and commission the charger and give you the installation details you need. In a shared building, get written permission (a no-objection certificate, or NOC) from the landlord or building management first. See our DoE compliance guide and ADDC's EV tariff page. The distribution company also verifies the installation before it permits electricity supply to the charger.

Does an EV charger have to be approved by the Abu Dhabi QCC?

Yes, it has to comply. The Department of Energy's EV charging policy (effective 1 March 2022, clause 4.3.4) says every EV charger must comply with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) Specific Requirements for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment before and after installation. Under the QCC scheme, manufacturers, suppliers and distributors obtain either product certification or product registration for each model. Ask for the QCC certificate or registration number of the model on your quotation before you order. See the Department of Energy policy and our DoE compliance guide. Certification is the fuller route (an in-depth assessment, the right to use the Abu Dhabi Trustmark and ongoing market surveillance); registration is a limited assessment with no Trustmark and no follow-up surveillance. Both certificates are valid for three years, so check the expiry date and that the model and power rating on the certificate match your quote.

Can I install an EV charger myself in Abu Dhabi?

Not on your own. The Department of Energy's policy requires the distribution company to verify every EV charger installation against the Electricity Wiring Regulations before it permits electricity supply, and the wiring regulations restrict electrical installation work to licensed contractors. Emirtech installs and commissions the charger unit. Fixed wiring, distribution-board work and the testing certificate are Electrical Installation Work that Abu Dhabi reserves to holders of a distribution-company Competency Certificate, and the quotation names who carries out and certifies that work. Where a utility-tied step needs an endorsed contractor we say so at the survey. Ask any installer, including us, who is responsible for each step and to confirm it in writing.

What are the steps to install an EV charger in Abu Dhabi?

In order: (1) a site survey and load check of your distribution board, supply phase, cable route and parking position; (2) choosing the charger for your car and supply, for example 7.4 kW on single-phase or 11 to 22 kW on three-phase; (3) approvals, where the owner registers the charger with the distribution company and, in a shared building, gets written permission from the landlord or management; (4) installing a dedicated protected circuit, the cable and the wall mounting; (5) testing and commissioning to IEC 61851 with handover documents; (6) verification by the distribution company before electricity supply is permitted, and fitting of the dedicated EVSE meter. We confirm the order and the timeline at the survey.

How long does EV charger installation take?

For a standard villa wallbox the physical installation is typically a matter of hours to a day once the survey is done and approvals are in place, and the approval and meter steps usually take longer than the installation itself. Three-phase upgrades, long cable runs, trenching and multi-charger commercial sites take longer. As a published reference, BYD UAE quotes up to five days from survey to setup for its home package. This is a typical range for the work, not a promise: we confirm the timeline for your site at the survey.

How do I charge an electric car in the UAE?

There are three ways: public chargers, AC and DC fast, found through charging-map apps; a home or workplace wallbox, which is the cheapest and most convenient for daily use; and a portable charger on a suitable socket for occasional use. In Abu Dhabi, an EV charger at your property has to be registered with the distribution company so a dedicated meter can be fitted. Most owners charge at home overnight and use public fast chargers on longer trips. See our home EV charger page for the options and approvals.

What breaker (MCB) and cable does an EV charger need?

An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit, and because it runs at full load for hours, the breaker and cable are chosen with margin above the charger's rated current. As a guide, a 7.4 kW single-phase charger draws about 32 A, an 11 kW three-phase charger about 16 A per phase and a 22 kW three-phase charger about 32 A per phase. The exact breaker rating, cable size, RCD protection and earthing depend on the cable run, the distribution board and the charger model, and must meet the applicable wiring regulations and the distribution company's requirements, so they are set after the site survey rather than from a table.

What IP rating does an outdoor EV charger need in Abu Dhabi?

The Abu Dhabi QCC specific requirements for EV supply equipment call for socket-outlets to be at least IP44 indoors and IP55 outdoors, and for permanent charging stations to have at least IK08 impact resistance. Direct sun and sand make the charger's rating, its shading and its mounting position worth checking at the survey.

How do I request a quotation for an EV charger installation?

Call +971 55 651 7843, email [email protected] or use the quotation form. Share the property address in Abu Dhabi, target charger rating (7.4 / 11 / 22 kW AC or DC), location of the main distribution board and any photos of the proposed charger position so we can scope the survey efficiently.
