NVR vs DVR: Which CCTV Recorder Do You Need?

An NVR records IP cameras over network cable; a DVR records analog cameras over coaxial cable. Here is how to choose for a new or an existing system in the UAE.

In short: choose an NVR for a new installation. It records IP cameras over network cable, supports higher resolution, power over the same cable (PoE) and AI analytics, and it is where the market has moved. Choose a DVR only when you already have working analog cameras and coaxial cable that you want to keep. Both record on site, so both can keep recording without internet; only remote viewing needs it. Hybrid recorders accept both camera types, which helps when you upgrade in stages. Emirtech designs and installs CCTV in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and ADMCC approval rules apply to CCTV at regulated premises in Abu Dhabi.

Which one for which site

Existing analog system

Working cameras and coaxial cable that still do the job.

A DVR or hybrid recorder keeps the cabling.

New villa

A few cameras at the gate, entrances and perimeter.

An NVR with PoE cameras is the usual choice.

Shop or office

Entrances, tills, stores and corridors.

An NVR gives clearer pictures and easier growth.

Warehouse or large site

Many cameras, long cable runs and a need for analytics.

An NVR with switches and a plan for storage.

Staged upgrade

Replacing analog cameras a few at a time.

A hybrid recorder accepts both camera types.

Remote or farm site

Limited power and poor internet.

Local recording on site; plan remote viewing separately.

Where the recordings are kept

The recorder is not the only choice; where recordings sit changes cost, risk and access.

Recorder on site (NVR or DVR)

Recordings stay on a hard disk at the property. It keeps recording without internet and gives you full control of the footage.

Hybrid recorder

Accepts analog and IP cameras, useful for upgrading in stages without replacing everything at once.

Cloud or camera memory card only

Convenient for one or two cameras but limited in storage, evidence handling and control; not a replacement for a recorder at larger sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an NVR better than a DVR?
For a new installation, usually yes: IP cameras and an NVR give higher resolution, PoE cabling, more analytics and an easier upgrade path. A DVR is still sensible when you already have working analog cameras and cable that you want to keep. We recommend after a site survey.
Can an NVR work without internet?
Yes. An NVR records IP cameras over the local network and keeps recording without internet. Internet is needed for remote viewing on a phone, cloud alerts and automatic time synchronisation. The same is true of a DVR.
Is an NVR cheaper than a DVR?
It depends on the whole system, not the box. IP cameras can cost more than analog cameras, while PoE cabling can simplify installation; a DVR can be cheaper where existing cable is reused. Compare quotations for the same number of cameras, quality and storage.
What are the disadvantages of an NVR?
IP systems need a little more network planning: a PoE switch, fixed IP addresses and sensible security settings. Individual cameras can cost more. These are minor points when the system is set up properly.
Can I use my old analog cameras with an NVR?
Not directly. Analog cameras need a DVR, a hybrid recorder or video encoders that convert them to IP. If the cameras are old or low quality, replacing them with IP cameras is often worth considering.
Do I need PoE for an NVR system?
Not strictly, but PoE is the usual choice because one cable carries video and power, which makes installation neater and more reliable. See PoE explained.
How much storage do I need?
It depends on the number of cameras, the resolution, the recording mode and how long you keep recordings. See the storage calculation guide and CCTV footage retention in the UAE.
Which is better for a villa?
A villa installed today normally uses an NVR with IP cameras at the gate, entrances and perimeter. See how many CCTV cameras a villa needs and home security camera systems.
Hikvision or Dahua recorders?
Both make capable NVRs and DVRs; the right choice depends on the cameras, features and support you want. See Hikvision vs Dahua, Hikvision installation and Dahua installation. Emirtech is not a partner of either brand.
