PoE 802.3af device sizing
We map fixed-lens IP cameras and basic card readers to PoE 802.3af ports (15.4W switch / 12.95W device) so each unit gets stable wattage without over-specifying the switch or wasting budget on unnecessary PoE+ headroom.
PoE Power Budget · Abu Dhabi
Emirtech calculates Power-over-Ethernet budgets and installs managed PoE switches that reliably power IP cameras, biometric readers and PTZ units across Abu Dhabi sites. We size watts per port, total switch budget and UPS backup to help avoid cameras dropping because a switch ran out of power.

Emirtech is an ADMCC-approved electronic-security contractor founded in 2018, operating from M44, Mussafah Industrial Area, Abu Dhabi, and reachable on +971 55 651 7843. We design and install Power-over-Ethernet networks that feed IP cameras, access-control readers, intercom stations, biometric terminals and PoE-powered displays across Abu Dhabi Emirate and Al Ain. Our PoE budget engineering covers three IEEE standards: PoE 802.3af delivers 15.4W at the switch port and 12.95W at the device — adequate for most fixed-lens IP cameras and basic card readers. PoE+ 802.3at raises that to 30W at the switch and 25.5W at the device — required for PTZ cameras with heaters, biometric terminals with screens and thermal cameras. PoE++ 802.3bt Type 3 supplies 60W and Type 4 supplies 90W — used for premium PTZ units with washers and wipers, large biometric terminals and PoE-powered monitors at guard desks. We calculate switch power budgets honestly: a 24-port PoE+ switch can only supply 30W on every port (24 ports × 30W = 720W) if its published PoE budget is at least 720W, and many 24-port switches are budgeted well below that, so we plan headroom per project and verify against the manufacturer datasheet. We pair PoE switches with sized UPS backup so cameras remain online during mains supply dips, and we label each port with device, watts and patch destination. Hardware we install includes managed switches from Cisco Catalyst, HPE Aruba, MikroTik and TP-Link Omada — selected to match the device load, VLAN plan and project budget. Honest scope: we are not an Authorised Distributor of Cisco, HPE Aruba, MikroTik or TP-Link; we install and configure these switches commercially through authorised UAE channels. We are not affiliated with IEEE or any standards body. We hold no manufacturer-level credential of our own. PoE engineering capabilities
We map fixed-lens IP cameras and basic card readers to PoE 802.3af ports (15.4W switch / 12.95W device) so each unit gets stable wattage without over-specifying the switch or wasting budget on unnecessary PoE+ headroom.
PTZ cameras with heaters, thermal cameras and biometric terminals draw closer to 25W. We assign these to PoE+ ports (30W switch / 25.5W device) and confirm peak draw against manufacturer datasheets before commissioning.
Premium PTZ units with washers, large biometric terminals and PoE-powered guard-desk monitors need PoE++ Type 3 at 60W or Type 4 at 90W. We deploy 802.3bt switches where the device sheet demands it, never under-spec.
A 24-port switch can only run every port at 30W if its PoE budget is at least 720W, and many have a lower budget. We tally projected load, add headroom, check the vendor datasheet limit and document the result so future expansions do not crash the switch.
From device-list intake to live commissioning, every PoE switch we install for an Abu Dhabi project ships with a written power-budget calculation, port labels and a UPS backup plan. PoE delivery extras
PoE switches without UPS lose every camera and reader during a supply dip. We size online or line-interactive UPS units, calculate runtime against full PoE load and integrate with the wider building UPS plan.
We configure managed switches with VLANs for cameras and access control, QoS for video, port security and SNMP monitoring — so the PoE network is not just powered but observable and segmented.
Cat6 or Cat6A structured cabling, labelled patch panels, certified fly-leads and tested permanent links — the physical foundation that lets PoE budgets actually reach the device end without voltage drop surprises.
Every project closes with a port schedule, switch configuration backup, PoE budget calculation sheet, test results and as-built drawings — so future contractors can extend the network without guessing.
Emirtech publishes scope plainly so clients, consultants and main contractors know exactly what an Emirtech PoE engagement covers — and what it does not. Our PoE power budget service is a commercial install-and-configure service grounded in our ADMCC approval and Abu Dhabi delivery footprint.
This scope statement is the same one shared with main contractors, FM teams and consultants at tender stage. If a project needs work outside our scope — for example SIRA-regulated Dubai installations (delivered through SIRA-approved partners, with Emirtech coordinating) or fire-alarm commissioning — we will say so and recommend a suitably approved contractor.
Common questions
PoE 802.3af delivers 15.4W at the switch port and 12.95W at the device — fine for fixed-lens IP cameras and basic card readers. PoE+ 802.3at delivers 30W at the switch and 25.5W at the device — needed for PTZ cameras with heaters, thermal cameras and biometric terminals. PoE++ 802.3bt Type 3 supplies 60W and Type 4 supplies 90W — used for premium PTZ units, large biometric terminals and PoE-powered monitors.
We list every device on the switch with its rated watt draw from the manufacturer datasheet, sum the worst-case load, add headroom for peak draw and compare against the switch's published PoE budget. A 24-port switch can only sustain 24 ports at 30W if its published PoE budget is at least 720W, and many 24-port switches have a lower budget, so we verify against the vendor datasheet and document the result.
No. Emirtech is not an Authorised Distributor or Channel Partner of Cisco, HPE Aruba, MikroTik or TP-Link. We install and configure these managed PoE switches commercially through authorised UAE channels. We hold no manufacturer-level credential of our own. Our regulatory credential is ADMCC approval for electronic-security work in Abu Dhabi Emirate.
Without UPS, every camera, reader and intercom powered through a PoE switch goes dark the moment the mains supply dips or fails. We size UPS units to carry the full PoE load for a defined runtime in minutes, so security coverage continues during outages and the switch shuts down gracefully if power does not return.
For ADMCC-regulated electronic security work, our geographic scope is Abu Dhabi Emirate only. We can deliver pure network and PoE switch installation across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. SIRA-regulated installations in Dubai are delivered through SIRA-approved partners, with Emirtech coordinating.
