Clinic Network, Firewall & VLAN Segmentation — Abu Dhabi Healthcare

Emirtech Technology designs and installs the firewall, VLAN segmentation, structured cabling, Wi-Fi and managed networking that Abu Dhabi clinics need to protect EMR, PACS, Malaffi-connected systems and patient data — supporting the clinic's own ADHICS programme.

How does Emirtech design clinic network security for Abu Dhabi healthcare?

A flat network — where clinical workstations, patient guest Wi-Fi, medical-device IoT, CCTV and staff laptops all share the same broadcast domain — is one of the biggest network-side risks to an Abu Dhabi clinic. A single compromised guest device or vulnerable medical IoT becomes a path to EMR data. Proper segmentation helps cut off that path. Emirtech designs clinic networks around five separated VLANs minimum: (1) Clinical / EMR-connected workstations on a tightly-controlled VLAN with role-based access; (2) Staff back-office on a separate VLAN for admin, billing, HR and general office work; (3) Patient guest Wi-Fi on a separate VLAN with captive portal, bandwidth shaping and policies that prevent it reaching anything else; (4) IoT and medical-device VLAN for radiology equipment, lab devices, vital-signs monitors and similar — with strict policies on what they can and cannot reach; (5) Management VLAN for switches, APs and firewall. Plus a separate CCTV VLAN where ADMCC-approved CCTV is in place. Inter-VLAN policies enforced at a FortiGate, Sophos or SonicWall firewall follow least-privilege — by default nothing crosses VLANs except where explicitly allowed. Add MFA at the identity layer, EDR at the endpoint layer and backup at the data layer, and the clinic has a much stronger technical baseline supporting the ADHICS programme. As a security and IT systems integrator (ADMCC-approved for security systems) based in Mussafah M44 since 2018, we deliver across every Abu Dhabi district plus Al Ain, and, in Dubai, IT AMC and time attendance through scheduled on-site visits.

What we deliver

Core clinic network capabilities

Business-Grade Firewall

FortiGate, Sophos XGS or SonicWall firewall with healthcare-appropriate policies; IPS, web filtering, DNS filtering; site-to-site VPN to branch clinics; SSL-VPN for clinical telework where applicable.

VLAN Segmentation

Minimum 5-VLAN design — clinical, staff, patient guest, IoT / medical device, management — with inter-VLAN policies following least-privilege; separate CCTV VLAN where ADMCC-approved CCTV is in place.

Managed Switching & PoE

Managed switches (Aruba CX, Cisco Meraki MS, Ruijie, FortiSwitch) with proper VLAN tagging, PoE for cameras and APs, and integration with the firewall for unified policy.

Clinic Wi-Fi with VLAN Separation

Business Wi-Fi (Aruba Instant On, Cisco Meraki, Ruijie) with separate SSIDs per VLAN — clinical staff SSID on the clinical VLAN, patient guest SSID with captive portal on the guest VLAN, IoT SSID for medical devices.

Flat clinic networks are an ADHICS problem — and a real risk

If a single compromised patient laptop can reach the EMR server, the network design is fundamentally broken. Proper segmentation is one of the highest-leverage technical controls a clinic can deploy. Call +971 55 651 7843 or request a free clinic network audit.

Where we install clinic networks

Common clinic network engagements

New clinic network design

New clinic fit-out where the network is designed from day one with proper VLAN segmentation, firewall policies and managed switching.

Flat-network remediation

Existing clinics with flat (unsegmented) networks — we redesign and migrate to a properly segmented VLAN structure with minimal disruption to clinical operations.

Multi-clinic chain consolidation

Multi-clinic chains standardising network design across branches — consistent firewall, VLAN structure and Wi-Fi SSIDs across all sites with central management.

Pre-audit network uplift

Clinics preparing for an ADHICS audit with their DoH-licensed consultancy can ask Emirtech to uplift the network layer to support audit findings — segmentation, firewall hardening, logging.

How a clinic network project unfolds

A typical clinic network engagement:

  • Audit: Existing network mapped — current VLAN structure (if any), connected devices, internet-exposed services, existing firewall rules.
  • Segmentation design: Decide VLAN structure — clinical, staff, patient guest, IoT, management — and write inter-VLAN policies that follow least-privilege.
  • Firewall & switching: Specify FortiGate / Sophos / SonicWall sized to clinic throughput, plus managed switches with proper VLAN tagging.
  • Wi-Fi redesign: Separate SSIDs per VLAN — clinical staff on clinical VLAN, guest with captive portal on guest VLAN, IoT for medical devices.
  • Cabling check: Cat6 / Cat6A cabling audited; replaced or supplemented where needed.
  • Logging: Firewall and switch events sent to a SIEM (Microsoft Sentinel, Wazuh, Elastic) for retention supporting audit-trail requirements.
  • Migration: Phased cutover with minimal clinical-operation disruption; tested before live.
  • Documentation: Network diagram, VLAN structure, firewall rule documentation handed to the clinic for the compliance file.

Emirtech is an independent integrator (ADMCC-approved for security systems). We deliver clinic network and firewall infrastructure; we are not a DoH-licensed cybersecurity consultancy, ADHICS-accredited auditor or Malaffi-endorsed integrator.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does VLAN segmentation matter for a clinic?
On a flat (unsegmented) network, a single compromised device — a patient phone on guest Wi-Fi, a vulnerable medical IoT device, a phishing-clicked staff laptop — can potentially reach the EMR server or PACS storage. VLAN segmentation, enforced by firewall policy, helps contain incidents to one segment — limiting exposure of clinical data when one device is compromised. This is one of the most important technical controls in ADHICS alignment.
What firewall does Emirtech install in Abu Dhabi clinics?
FortiGate (FortiGate 40F/60F/80F/100F sized to clinic), Sophos XGS, SonicWall TZ and NSa. All are business-grade UTM/NGFW with IPS, web filtering, DNS filtering, VPN and VLAN-aware policies. We size to throughput, concurrent-session need and feature requirements.
Can you isolate patient guest Wi-Fi properly?
Yes. Patient guest Wi-Fi is on its own VLAN with captive portal, splash page, bandwidth shaping and firewall policies that prevent it from reaching anything else on the network. Captive portal can include terms of service and clinic branding.
What about medical-device IoT — radiology equipment, monitors, lab devices?
Medical IoT goes on a separate VLAN with restricted policies — explicit allow-lists for what it can reach (typically only the specific EMR / PACS / LIS endpoints needed), explicit deny for everything else. Medical IoT is often vulnerable (legacy OS, no patching) so segmentation is critical.
Do you log firewall events to a SIEM?
Yes. Firewall, switch and Wi-Fi events sent to Microsoft Sentinel, Wazuh or Elastic with appropriate retention. The retention period and search capability supports audit-trail requirements expected in ADHICS.
How do I get a quote for a clinic network or firewall project?
Call +971 55 651 7843 or request a free clinic network audit. A specialist will visit the clinic and respond with a scoped proposal once the survey is done.
