What does backup and disaster recovery for access control involve in Abu Dhabi?

Backup and disaster recovery for access control is the technical configuration that keeps doors, readers and credentials operating when the head-end server, database, power supply, network or facility itself fails. Emirtech Technology is an ADMCC-approved installer based at Mussafah M44, Abu Dhabi, founded in 2018, and we configure DR-ready access control deployments for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain customers. Our scope covers six common failure modes: head-end server failure (we configure clustering with warm or hot failover), database corruption (we set up scheduled nightly backups and we restore-test them), site-wide power outage (we specify UPS runtime and ensure controllers continue making local access decisions in offline mode), network outage between controller and server (controllers must hold a local credential cache and continue authorising for as long as controller power and event-buffer capacity allow), credential database loss (we document a re-enrolment scenario as worst-case), and entire-facility loss (for enterprise customers we configure a DR-site warm-standby with replication). Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) are defined per customer during scoping. Configuration deliverables include nightly database backup jobs, replication to a DR site where in scope, offline-mode controller configuration with a local credential cache, UPS-protected controllers and head-end, and a periodic DR test plan. Honest scope: we configure technical disaster recovery for the access control system we install. We are not a DR / BCP consultancy, we do not write enterprise-wide Business Continuity Plans, we are not an ISO 22301 or NCEMA-cleared continuity firm, and we are not affiliated with any authorised DR / BCP consultancy in the UAE. For ADMCC-regulated electronic security work our geographic scope is Abu Dhabi and Al Ain only. Call +971 55 651 7843 or email [email protected] to discuss RTO / RPO targets and a DR configuration scope of works for your access control system.

DR Configuration Capabilities

How we configure backup and DR for access control

Head-end clustering and failover

We configure access control head-end servers in a cluster with warm or hot failover so a primary server failure does not lock out the site. Failover roles, virtual IPs and database replication are set up and documented during commissioning.

Nightly database backup and restore

We schedule nightly access control database backups, configure retention windows and run restore tests so backups are proven to be usable. Backup targets cover local storage, network share or DR-site replication depending on the scope agreed.

Offline-mode controller caching

We configure door controllers to hold a local credential cache and continue making access decisions when the head-end or network is unavailable, for as long as controller power and event-buffer capacity allow. Cache size, lockdown logic and re-sync behaviour are set per door group.

UPS-protected controllers and head-end

We specify UPS runtime for controllers, readers, PoE switches and the head-end server so doors remain powered through short outages. Generator handover, low-battery alerts and graceful shutdown of the head-end are configured where UPS is in scope.

DR-readiness checklist for Abu Dhabi access control

Use this checklist when scoping a backup and DR configuration for your access control head-end and door controllers. Call +971 55 651 7843 or request a free DR consultation to map your RTO / RPO targets to a configuration scope of works.

  • Define RTO and RPO targets per system (head-end, database, controllers)
  • Document the six failure modes the configuration must cover
  • Configure head-end clustering with warm or hot failover
  • Schedule nightly database backup with documented retention
  • Run periodic restore tests and record evidence
  • Configure offline-mode controller cache and confirm how long each controller model can run offline
  • Specify UPS runtime for controllers, switches and head-end
  • Configure UPS low-battery alerts and head-end graceful shutdown
  • Set up replication to DR site where enterprise scope applies
  • Document re-enrolment procedure as worst-case credential loss
  • Schedule annual DR walk-through test with customer attendance
  • Hand over DR runbook, backup logs and restore-test evidence

Failure Modes We Cover

DR scenarios configured during commissioning

Head-end server failure

Primary access control server hardware or operating system failure. We configure a clustered or warm-standby secondary server, replicate the database and document the failover sequence so a server outage does not stop badge reads at the doors.

Database corruption or loss

Access control database corruption, accidental deletion or ransomware impact. We configure nightly backups, retain multiple restore points and run restore tests so the credential, cardholder and event database can be rebuilt within the agreed RPO.

Network or power outage

Loss of network between controllers and head-end, or site-wide power loss. Controllers continue local access decisions from the offline cache, UPS keeps controllers and readers powered, and events re-sync to the head-end once connectivity returns.

DR-site warm-standby

For enterprise customers with an alternate facility, we configure a warm-standby DR head-end at the secondary site with replicated database and pre-staged controller configuration. RTO is defined during scoping and tested annually.

Scope — what we deliver and explicitly do not

Backup and DR for access control is technical configuration work on the system we install. It is not a Business Continuity consultancy engagement. Below is the honest split of what is in scope and what is not.

  • We deliver: head-end clustering, nightly database backup and restore tests, offline-mode controller cache configuration, UPS specification and integration, DR-site warm-standby setup where in scope, RTO / RPO documentation and an annual DR test plan for the access control system we install.
  • We do not deliver: enterprise-wide Business Continuity Plans, ISO 22301 certification work, NCEMA continuity assessments, cyber-DR tabletop exercises beyond access control scope, or DR strategy for systems we did not install.
  • We are not: a DR / BCP consultancy, an ISO 22301-certified continuity firm, an NCEMA-cleared enterprise DR provider, or a Channel Partner / Authorised Distributor of any access control brand other than our Control4 installation work through third-party authorised dealer.
  • We are not affiliated with: authorised DR/BCP consultancies in UAE, ISO 22301 certification bodies, NCEMA, or any enterprise continuity advisory firm.
  • Geographic scope for ADMCC-regulated electronic security work: Abu Dhabi and Al Ain only.
  • Brands are installed and configured through authorised UAE channels only.

If you need enterprise-wide BCP or ISO 22301 certification, engage a specialist consultancy and we will configure the access control DR layer to align with their plan.

Common questions

FAQs

What RTO and RPO can you achieve for access control in Abu Dhabi?

RTO and RPO are defined per customer during scoping. With nightly backups the RPO for database loss is up to 24 hours by design (data created since the last backup); the RTO for head-end failure depends on whether clustering or hot failover is in scope and is agreed and tested during scoping. Tighter targets need hot failover, more frequent backups and a DR site, which we will quote against your specific availability requirements.

What happens to the doors if the head-end server goes down?

We configure door controllers to operate in offline mode with a local credential cache, so cardholders continue to be granted or denied access without the head-end for as long as controller power and event-buffer capacity allow (confirmed per controller model). Events buffer locally and sync to the server when it returns. This is a standard configuration we set up at commissioning.

Do you write a Business Continuity Plan for our organisation?

No. We are not a DR / BCP consultancy and we do not write enterprise-wide Business Continuity Plans. We configure technical disaster recovery for the access control system we install, document RTO / RPO and provide a DR runbook for the access control scope only. Enterprise BCP work should be engaged with a specialist continuity consultancy.

Are you ADMCC-approved and what brand authorisations do you hold?

Yes, Emirtech Technology is ADMCC-approved for electronic security work in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Our only manufacturer credential is being a Control4 installer working with a third-party authorised dealer. We install and configure other access control brands through authorised UAE distribution channels, but we are not a Channel Partner or Authorised Distributor of those brands and we do not hold ISO 22301, NESA, ADHICS, SIRA or pen-test credentials.

Do you test the backups and DR configuration after commissioning?

Yes. We schedule a restore test of the access control database during commissioning and recommend periodic restore tests plus an annual DR walk-through. Restore-test evidence, backup logs and the DR runbook are handed over to the customer so audit trail is in place.

How do I get a quote for a backup and DR configuration?

Call +971 55 651 7843, email [email protected] or request a free DR consultation. We will scope your current head-end and controller setup, agree RTO / RPO targets with you and issue a written DR configuration scope of works covering clustering, backup, offline-mode cache, UPS and DR-site replication as required.
