Technical Considerations for 4K & 8K CCTV Deployments
Deploying ultra-high-definition cameras without correctly scaling the surrounding infrastructure produces systems that bottleneck on storage, network throughput, or power delivery — reducing the resolution benefit to zero. Emirtech's design process addresses all three layers before a single camera is mounted.
Resolution, Compression & Bitrate
A single 4K camera at full resolution typically generates a substantially higher bitrate than a 1080p camera, even when using H.265/H.265+ compression. An 8K stream multiplies this further. Emirtech engineers calculate the aggregate bitrate of a proposed camera layout and select NVR hardware and hard-drive configurations that sustain that load 24/7 without dropped frames or storage shortfalls. ADMCC's retention requirements, which are set by premises category and confirmed with ADMCC at survey, are factored into every storage calculation.
Network Infrastructure
High-resolution streams demand structured cabling that meets Cat 6 or Cat 6A performance standards. Where distances exceed standard PoE reach, or where cameras are deployed across separate buildings, Emirtech integrates fibre backbone segments. Switch selection accounts for the aggregate PoE++ power budget so that cameras, IR illuminators, and other powered devices are never under-supplied.
Camera Placement & Lens Selection
One of the most common planning errors on large sites is assuming that a high-resolution camera with a wide-angle lens will capture readable detail across a long distance. Emirtech's engineers combine resolution specifications with lens focal length calculations and scene geometry — ensuring that the pixel density at the target zone (a face, a vehicle plate, a doorway) meets the detail level the client actually needs. For large open areas, multi-sensor or panoramic cameras are often more efficient than multiple narrow-angle units.
| Resolution | Approx. Megapixels | Typical Use Case | Compression Standard |
|---|
| 4K UHD | ~8 MP | Car parks, retail floors, lobbies | H.265 / H.265+ |
| 6K / 9K Multi-sensor | ~12–25 MP | Open concourses, large perimeters | H.265 / MJPEG |
| 8K UHD | ~33 MP | Critical government, exhibition, transport | H.265 / H.266 (where supported) |
All figures are indicative; actual performance depends on the specific camera model and configuration. Emirtech provides model-level specifications during the system design phase.
